An ATM holding cash is a target, but the risk is very manageable with the right setup. Here’s what actually matters for physical security — separate from the card-data and PCI side, which we cover in our compliance guide.
Placement Is Your First Line of Defense
Where you put the machine matters more than almost anything else:
- Well-lit areas — a machine in a dark corner or exterior blind spot is a far easier target than one near the entrance under good lighting
- Camera coverage — position the ATM within view of an existing security camera, or add one if you don’t have coverage there
- Visibility from inside the business — staff should be able to see the machine, or at least its immediate area, during business hours
- Anchored, not portable — every ATM we place or sell is securely bolted or anchored; a machine that can be physically carried off is a liability regardless of what’s inside it
Deterrence Beats Reaction
Most ATM crime is opportunistic. A few low-cost steps go a long way:
- Visible camera signage, even in addition to real cameras
- Avoid loading cash at predictable times — vary the schedule
- Never discuss cash amounts or loading schedules in front of customers
- Keep the area around the machine clear so there’s nowhere to loiter unnoticed
Skimming Is a Different Threat Than Robbery
Skimming devices attached to the card reader or keypad are a card-data theft, not a cash theft, but they damage customer trust just as badly. Check the card reader and keypad periodically for anything loose, oddly shaped, or recently added — genuine ATM hardware doesn’t have removable attachments over the card slot.
If Something Does Happen
- Report to law enforcement and your ATM processor immediately
- Don’t attempt to intervene during an active incident — no amount of cash justifies the risk to you or your staff
- Review camera footage and share it promptly; faster reporting improves recovery odds
- After any incident, reassess placement and lighting — most repeat incidents happen at locations that don’t change anything afterward
